Pigmentation problems - Melasma
Uneven distribution of melanin (brown) pigment leads to unsightly skin blotchiness. Melanin is continuously laid down into the cells of the upper skin layer (epithelium) which in turn are constantly shed. Pigmented areas can be safely stripped away with chemical peels that leave the melanocytes (pigment producing cells) unharmed in the deeper part of the epithelium. This pigment can quickly reform unless the melanocytes are screened from sunlight and have chemical inhibitors applied to slow down their melanin production. In some people melanin pigment is laid down too deeply in the skin (below the epithelium in the dermis) and will not be amenable to most peel treatments. This possibility will be checked for and discussed at your first consultation. The danger of overly aggressive skin peeling or laser is unintended destruction of melanocytes causing unsightly permanently de-pigmented patches to appear. For this reason at Taryn Laine Clinic we favour a more conservative tissue peeling approach that does not cause this. Because skin preparation before, and ongoing treatment afterwards is so important, you will need to have a thorough planning discussion with our therapist as part of your initial consultation (and covered by that fee). De-pigmentation chemical peeling treatment can be truly gratifying in the correctly selected patient who fully co-operates with the required before and after skin care. |
